Dignitas. Abraço, Luciana.

English Version

On 14 September 2017 I lived one of the greatest academic experiences of my life. I went to Dignitas – To live with dignity – To die with dignity (hereafter in short “Dignitas”, the best known organization for the right to choose in life and life’s end in the world.

You must be thinking “how come you had the courage to go on Dignitas”? “What a morbid thing.” As well as being tempted to make some jokes like “did you dare to drink the water there?” Yes! I had the courage to go to Dignitas and I would go back there 1,000,000 times if they would welcome me and I will tell you why:

On 15 September 2017 I launched the book “Brazilian Treaty on the Fundamental Right to a Dignified Death” at the University of Lisbon, in Portugal. Knowing my trip to Europe, I decided to visit Dignitas, but I made a one-sided resolution and I did not tell them.

Yes, it was crazy. I had the idea, I told my partner (and a good friend) and she gave me the tickets to go to Zurich, thinking that I had already contacted Dignitas, but I, naively, thought it would be possible to get in touch the day before … The tickets were bought on 29 August and on 30 August I sent my first email to Dignitas.

But, I received an answer saying that the visit was not possible. And I started my saga. I insisted, I sent several e-mails, I sent my curriculum in English, I called there more than 7 times in a single day, and on 07 September I received their acceptance

First of all, I have to tell you that I was very lucky. Dignitas is not a place open to visitors and contrary to what I imagined (and contrary to what the media tells us), it is not a clinic. Dignitas is a not-for-profit member’s society which advocates, educates and supports for improving care and choice in life and at life’s end, an organization whose main objective is to implement freedom of choice and self-determination in matters of a dignified life and death around the world. . It’s not a hospital, a hospice, a clinic, a doctor’s office, or anything like that. There are no doctors employed at Dignitas.

The setting I found were tables, chairs, phones, files and people working – just like any office anywhere in the world. There was nothing morbid, no bad weather….

I spent about two hours talking to one of the board members, a lawyer, responsible for Dignitas today and although many of my doubts were answered on their website (www.dignitas.ch), being actually there had an extra thrill.

I could see how the incoming information is misrepresented. Assisted suicide is just one of the works of Dignitas. But the biggest – and most important of them – is information and education about quality of life, choice and dignified death, including the importance of people making a living will (yes, my little eyes shined). I have heard over and over again that they find the discussion about living will much more socially relevant than the discussion of assisted suicide itself.

I realized the value of the patient’s autonomy. And I have seen, in practice, how bureaucratic it is for a foreigner to access assisted suicide at Dignitas. The so-called “tourism to death” is far from being an oasis. Dignitas has an immense rigor that precedes the accomplishment of assisted suicide and, to have an idea, the minimum period between the application and membership to Dignitas and the accomplishment of assisted suicide is at least three to four months. So, do not just say “I want to die at Dignitas”, they have a motto: think – read and then take action. That is, if you first become interested in the subject, read the vast amount of material on Dignitas’ site. Only after the person is sure that he or she shares the same values of Dignitas can she decide to become a member and eventually perform assisted suicide if she meets the legal criteria for both.

In other words, it is necessary to go through a long process of sending and analyzing documents (all officially translated into English, German, French or Italian), and, in a later stage of the assessment procedure, two consultations with a Swiss doctor (who has no connection with Dignitas) who must certify the severity of the disease as well as the patient’s discernment.

Contrary to what I have heard from many people, Dignitas is not a “death machine”, but an institution that defends the right to self-determination and choice in life and a dignified death, within the law of the country in which it is based (Switzerland) and the whole procedure is done according to legal criteria.

And, no, I did not see anyone die. But I have seen people struggling within the legal limits to ensure the end-of-life autonomy of patients until the last moment. And I was very grateful for the opportunity. So I share these lines with you with the permission of Dignitas.

Sincerely,

Luciana.
